Through JQ Design I have
been able to continue work with new and seasoned clients,
as well as pursue my own artwork in sculpture and
painting.
I think of myself
primarily as a sculptor, though I draw, paint, am a
photographer and jeweler. I use photography to assist my
memory and to remind me of all the glorious parts of
nature that inspire my artwork. I draw to capture the
imaginary landscapes, and dream images, which become my
artwork.

| My
career as a sculptor has developed over the last
20 years. Sculpting trees was the best way to
begin! Their anatomy is complex, living and vital.
Like human anatomy, trees are full |
 |
| of internal
structure. I see the musculature of trees, and
love sculpting the "tension in the
substructure". When sculpting trees, I think
of the inner value of each piece. They must look
alive, or were once living and now have a spirit
of their own. There is no such thing as static,
undone nature. Always inhaling and exhaling, trees
have the source of life coursing through every root,
bough, branch and twig.

I will always
regard the time I spent learning from trees as my
greatest aid to becoming a good sculptor. With
this work my hands have become very strong and
well developed. I believe I could sculpt trees in
my sleep – I know I can do it in the dark!
